Homerun Derby 2007 Recap

The stage was set, eight of the top homerun hitters in the KWL set to square off in the 2007 homerun derby.  Two players return to the mix for this years derby; 06’ Derby Champ Andy Ross and runner-up Brian Meyers.  The remaining six contestants were made up of Bryan Jennings, Jamey Detamore, Matt Kirsch, Pat Kean, Mike Downs and Nick Margelis.

After the First round, the four top hitters advance to the second round. Brian Meyers let the way with 7. Andy Ross, Pat Kean each had 5 and Bryan Jennings ended up with 4. Every hitter in this years derby managed to at least put one homer on the board, as the majority of the hitters ended with two.

As the second round came to an end, Brian Meyers hammered 7 more for a total of 14.  Bryan Jennings followed up with 7 of his own for a total of 11, sending them into the final round for the Derby Championship Title. Andy Ross and Pat Kean only managed to 1 homer a peace in the second round, ending their days with 6 homers respectfully.

In the 2006 Derby, Brian Meyers lead all homerun hitters into the final round before loosing in sudden death to Andy Ross.   After hitting 14 homers in the first two rounds, he was a clear favorite for this year’s derby.  Bryan Jennings was to hit first, as fatigue from the first two rounds set in, Jennings was only able to muster 2 homers in the final round.  With only 3 homeruns to win, Brian Meyers stepped into the box for the third time.  Brian tied Jennings total of 2 with two outs remaining, but was unable to finish it off.  For the second straight year, the Derby went into sudden death.

Totals:
Bryan Jennings 14
Brian Meyers 16
Pat Kean 6
Andy Ross 6
Mike Downs 2
Jamey Detamore 2
Nick Margelis 2
Matt Kirsch 1

Bryan Jennings led off the sudden death round with a bomb to left center.  Once again, Brian found himself behind the eight ball in sudden death.  On the first pitch he saw in sudden death, Brian drove a ball deep down the left field line.  As the ball carried, it started to curve and ended up on the wrong side of the foul pole for the last and final out of the 2007 Derby.

An unbelievable finish for the second straight year, and once again Brian Meyers came up just short of his first KWL Derby win.

Congratulation to the 2007 Derby Champion, Bryan Jennings!
