KWL Triple Crown Race Heats up!
7/11/08 by Brian Meyers |
| Pulling up the finish line of our third season, the KWL has seen many players battle for it, but only to come up short in the final week. This year could become the first season for the KWL to see a hitter crowned with the ultimate hitting achievement; The Triple Crown. |
In 2006, the leagues first season, three players fought all season for a chance at the Crown; Joe McGee, Steve Abshagen and Brian Meyers. As the end of the season unfolded, Steve's average plummeted and killed his chances. Brian finished with the League lead in Rbi's (31) and Average (.526), but Joe McGee (one of the leagues most prolific homerun hitters) finished with 12 knocks, 5 in front of Meyers.
In 2007, the league split into two divisions; American and National, thus increasing chances for the Triple Crown. In the American League, Matt Kirsh held a substantial Homerun and Rbi lead the entire season; possibly the biggest favorite to lock up a Triple Crown. |

However, it ends up taking more then just being the favored player to actually win the award. Adam Bontrager of the Belly Itchers ended the season with the batting title (.473) and Kirsch finished 4th in average (.435), 1st in homeruns (19) and 1st in Rbi's (65).
On the National league side, Brian Meyers once again was in the mix as he battled with Bryan Jennings. Jennings ended up slugging his way to become the Homerun Champ with 22 and finished with the leagues highest average (.496), but Brian finished 2 Rbi's ahead of Jennings with 54. |
This year's chase appears to be just as entertaining as the two years past. Six players remain within an arm's length of each category; Josh Sobeck (AL), Kristy Stratton (AL), Brian Meyers (AL), Bryan Jennings (NL), Adam Bontrager (NL) and Josh Little (NL).
At the end of week 8, Jennings is the front runner to possible bring home the Crown as he leads the National league in Average (.511) Homeruns (17) and is only 3 Rbi's behind newcomer Josh Little with (39). |

Will someone finally win the Triple Crown in 2008? Will both leagues see a Triple Crown winner in 2008? We will all know the answer in just three more short weeks!
