2009 Allstar Game Recap

American League AllStars
National League AllStars

One of the biggest goals of the 2008 winter meetings were to get the Inter-league games played once again. With the addition of 2 more team slots and the addtion of the third playing night, this allowed for the Inter-league games to once again be part of the league. Up to the half way point, the National League has led the way winning 9 of the first 15 matchups.

Heading into Saturday's AllStar game each league put together their best available participates to once again battle in a very special 9 inning exhibition game. The NL sporting fashionable Navy shirts, and the AL wearing Charcoal. This years logo's were designed by Mason Everett of the Monday Night 40's.

In the past, the two leagues have been on opposite sides of the overall stats. Normally one side features better pitching, while the other has better hitting. However for the first time in three years of doing this event, the hitting was nearly the same. The AL came in the break hitting .286 overall with 100 Homers. While the NL is hitting .292 with 103 Homeruns.

The only statistical difference could be found between the two leagues was the overall league ERA's. The AL is right around 3.33, while the NL is more then a full run higher at 4.45.

On paper, this years AllStar game appeared to be anyone's game to win!

This years starting pitching honors went to Melissa Brink for the AL and Adam Nash of the NL.

The National league wasted no time getting on the board, with a 2-run homer from Mike Downs and a Solo shot by Steve Everett in the top half of the first inning. The confiendence on the NL side was high after getting up 3 runs early.

To lead of the home half of the inning, Kevin Marszalek hit a single. After a ground out and a walk to Matt Kirsch, the American league turned the momentum over when Brian Meyers hit a deep fly to left field that Steve Everettt was unable to corral. The mood was electric for the AL, while the NL quickly lost focus. The AL tacked on 1 more run to take the lead before finishing off the first with the bases loaded.

Adam Nash would struggle with his control the rest his outing giving up 10 walks over his 2 2/3 innings of work. Aj Tate came in to clean up the mess left behind with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the 3rd, but was unable to slow down the quick moving AL offense. Brian Meyers hit a 2-run single up the middle of the field, breaking the game open with a score of 3-8. Rbi number 4 and 5 for long time KWL slugger.

The American League continued to dominate the day, only allowing one more run in the 4th frame, but tacking on 4 more runs in the bottom of the 6th off a 2-run Homerun by Bryan Jennings and a 2-run double by Kevin Marszalek.

Matt Jennings of the Snowsuit and Icey Road slammed the door shut on the National league with 3 scoreless innings while only giving up 1 hit. (Matt's Mom was in attendance and she was thrilled with his performance).

The American League now has a 2-1 lead in the AllStar series.
