Meet the Aces! 7/1/12

The Kalamazoo Wiffleball League is proudly entering the inaugural 2012 NWLA Tournament.  The Tournament is made up of 8 leagues from the NWLA and from various locations throughout the USA. The Aces will head to Columbus, Ohio on July 13th to prepare for games Saturday night and a full day of play on Sunday.  Hopefully they’ll be able to put on a great showing, beat up on teams from around the country, and bring us back a trophy. Regardless of the brass, there is no doubt this band of misfit KWL’ers will represent our league, showing off the skills they’ve honed in years of Kalamazoo Summers play. (Awesome logo provided by none other than Mason Everett).

Here is the roster for your Kalamazoo Aces:

Captain - Brian Lewis
Team: Scared Hitless
Throws: R Bats: R

It wouldn’t be a real KWL medley if we didn’t include a Ginger!  The KWL has always been known for its equal opportunities and we plan to put that on display in Columbus!   This "Ginga Ninja" may need SPF 75 sunscreen just to step into the summer sun, but you'll be the one who gets burned if you leave a pitch over the plate. Known around the KWL for his nice guy personality, knee length socks that are 2 sizes too small, and his unquestionable leadership. Also known to give up a gopher ball or two, but you'll mostly see him laying out for balls in the outfield, always giving 110%. He’s a Big Flats Beer and MMORPG aficionado.

Career Stats: BA .316; HR-18 RBI-68 RUNS-90  W-6; L-10; ERA 5.91
Kevin Marszalek
Team: Friars
Throws: R Bats: R

Known around Kalamazoo as "The Icon," with numerous endorsement deals under his belt, including the cover of storied "KWL 2K11" game. Again, one of the nice guys in the league, he is well accepted by his peers even though he likes soccer, the Chicago Bears and the Cleveland Indians (the three most hated things in the state of Michigan.) Marz is the proud owner of 2 league MVPs, 1 Cy Wiffle award, and the 2010 batting Triple Crown winner, and also captured his first championship in 2010. His ability to recognize a pitch before it's even thrown gives him a leg up on the opposition.

Career Stats: BA .354; HR-67; RBI-145 W-16; L-11; ERA 2.80
Adam Kuzmin
Team: Scared Hitless
Throws: R Bats: R Sees: R

One of the nastiest pitchers in the history of not only the KWL, but all of Wiffleball, Kuzmin possesses 4 quality pitches thrown from a multitude of arm angles. Perhaps the finest athlete to every play sports with only one eye; no he's not giving you the stinkeye, that's just the way he is. Not only is he lights out from the mound (averaging a no hitter every other start) but he is deadly from the plate, as his 19 HRs and 50 RBIs last season tipped the MVP scales in his favor. Again, one of the league nice guys, he'll probably follow you around begging for an autograph if you are even remotely famous. A WNBA groupie, he covers his hidden obsession by telling friends he's "going to the Tigers game."

Career Stats: BA .331; HR-41; RBI-116 W-21; L-4; ERA 0.96
Mark Thomson
Team: Scared Hitless
Throws: R Bats: R

The "nice guy" reputation for the Aces ends here with the league resident bad boy, Mark Thompson. Some say he was a seal clubber in his previous occupation, but no one really knows since he's the KWL's most mysterious figure. His career is storied for his frequent occasions of coming up huge in the clutch, but in case of failure, watch out! The league's most well-known bat tosser and bucket kicker, you better watch your back lest you end up with a Wiffle bat upside your head. Although he is a loner, his majestic calves are subject to frequent cramping, and in that case he will allow some lucky soul to rub him out.

Career Stats: BA .272; HR-23; RBI-82 W-5; L-8; ERA 5.88
Zac Adams
Team: Industrials
Throws: R Bats: R

Young Zachary came into 2012 with a 8 - 4 pitching record for his career, yet was the 4th starter on a very deep Indies team. After flirting with free agency in the offseason, he resigned with the promise of a regular rotation spot, and he hasn't disappointed, with a 4 -1 record so far. Although he has championships in his history with a high school state baseball title, he has yet to taste a title in the KWL. He also LOVES Hello Kitty. It has yet to be determined if his girlfriend will be making the trip, but if you see a young lady on the sidelines at the tournament knitting sweaters for displaced swamp possums, that's her!

Career Stats: BA .280; HR 22; RBI 63 - W 12; L 5; ERA 3.30
David Ayres
Team: Scared Hitless
Throws: R Bats: R

The 2012 season has been a coming out party for Ayres, who has set aside other commitments to be the missing piece in the Scared Hitless puzzle. Standing 3 - 0 and not having allowed a run all season as of this post, he gives the team the extra quality starter they've always lacked. Being involved in baseball as both a player and a coach his entire life, he has a classic swing, and the repeatable pitching motion that it takes to control the fickle Wiffleball. Some say he is as focused as they come, but word on the street is you can get under his skin by telling him that the Undertaker isn't one of the top 5 wrestlers of all time.

Career Stats: BA .310; HR-8; RBI-38 W-5; L-2; ERA 1.30
